people  - myself, ben, warren, (brothers) jonny

we went fishing to a few locations on sunday, we started off at hutchenson's quay near portna canal, the weather looked good on the way down but as we arrived and started to tackle up the weather deteriorated very quickly. the snow started to fall and it was bitterly cold, we fished at this location for an hour but due to the extra water in the river from the rain in the previous 2 days the water was moving very fast and it was almost impossible to reckonize a bite or get a bed of ground bait down, i suggested a move down the road to portna lock canal as the canal usually contains some jack pike. we went down and threw out the feeder rods and i had a stonker of a take but was busy smoking a feg and duly missed it. (robbed my maggots) 5 minutes later my brother warren had a whooper take and had a hook up, we thought it was a bream but we couldnt have been more wrong, he fought the fish for 5 minutes without the fish showing (his fighting stance had to be seen to be beleived, i could have swore he was wrestling a shark) when the fish did show i couldnt beleive my eyes, it was a rainbow trout of about 6lb, as i went to lift the fish from the water, the fish gave one last shake of the head and straightned out his size 14, (he nearly cried) gone, 5 minutes later his mate jonny got his rod pulled in by another big fish, we seen the splash of the fish but didnt manage to identify its species, we could only conclude it was the same fish, i imediatatly tied on a spinner and after 3 casts managed to hook his rod, we thought we might still get this fish but alas the line was firmly snagged (no fish) after a while we decided another move was in order, we moved to movangher canal near kilrea. the weather got even worse after walking for 10 minutes to what are meant to be the best pegs, we then started to catch a few fish, the bites where very tentitive so you needed to be on the ball to get a hook up, we ended the day with 13 fish between 4 of us (jonny blanked) this is a very poor total if your not a course fisherman and dont know, your talking 50 fish per man in a 6 hour session is acceptable. 3 roach, 3 perch, 4 skimmer bream, 2 gudgeon and 1 hybrid was the takings for the day. sorry the report was so long but it needed to be to accuratly describe the whole day, we had all 4 seasons in 1 day and that is what eventually beat us or more fish may have been taken. thanks for reading
