Electric Outboard Motors

Hi all,
I have been contemplating buying a 54lb thrust Electric Outboard for fishing the small trout lakes, the largest size lake would be around 370 acres.
I have an 8hp 2 stroke yamaha outboard, but it makes too much noise for these small lakes, & its messy carrying it around in the car.

Has anyone experience using these motors all day for boats around 17-19' long.
I would be uing it for short bursts back up the lake to start a new drift, not for all day trolling.
Alot of guys like them for trolling, because they are so silent. also alot of guys chasing trout in the dark that are feeding on buzzers use them, you can sneak right up infront of the feeding fish without spooking them.
what about the speed that these motors operate at, would a 54lb thrust at max speed be the same as a 2hp petrol motor?

I would appreciate any help you could offer guys!
heres the model of motor I am interested in

wayne

I recently purchased a Min Kotta 36lb thrust, the reason I purchased this over a 54lb thrust was that a few people told me that with a 54lb to get maximum usage of a full day afloat TWO batteries would be needed to rum it, even when just using it to run back to the start of your drift. I dont know how true this is but 4 different people told me this information and for this reason I opted for the 36lb thrust.
Like you say the electric motors give you the advantage of stealth over a 2 stroke outboard which is noisy and creates a lot of vibration. Them Rhino motors I believe are from the same factory as the shakesphere just with a different casing.
Hope this helps.

I have been using one of the 55lb Minn Kota Maximum engines for 4 years and I have to say a brilliant piece of kit.
I use mine to power my 19ft about and no problems. Got mine from the states so it saved me quite a few quid. In terms of battery I use a large leisure battery and it works fine for me all day. The Maximum is easier on batteries as opposed to the ordinary minn kota. I use mine for trolling etc.
I hope this has been of some help

Hi there I bought a Rhino 44lb thrust last year and it has been excellent. In terms of speed, I don't know, but it pushes a 19ft sheelin boat no problems. I used it for the first time on Sheelin as a second engine specifically for going up and down drifts and for "sneaking" up on feeding fish. As for battery life, I have a 110 amp hour leisure battery and got 4 days use out of it no probs, using it for that reason, but I would expect to get a full day if using it for what you have explained.

Hope this is of use to you.

Electric Outboard Motors

Thank you all very much for the info Exclamation

I have decided that The Min Kotta 54lb Maximum is the outboard for me,
I really don't mind using 2 leisure batteries connected together for the whole day on the lake.
I can put one batetry either side of the boat under the seat.
The money I will save from buying the motor in the U.S will go towards buying 2 leisure batteries.
I have seen the  Min Kotta outboard motor on Cabelas webiste & its a great price when you take into account how weak the $dollar is at the moment.

By the way some of my lough fishing friends are buying their folding boat seats & 3/4 lenght jackets of Cabelas.

Dou guys use an inline fuse for your motors to prevent electrical damage to the motor?
Richard

Never needed an in-line fuse. One note of caution regarding Cabelas, you will be charged a crazy price for shipping. And they will also send it via a courier, therefore you get hit by all the duties and charges.
Better to get kit sent via USPS that way you have a good chance of  not getting hit with the taxes.
Try Bass Pro and ask that they send it via USPS. You will need to chat to whoever you buy from over the phone. Its the only way to ensure that it is shipped via USPS.

Electric Outboard Motors

I must admit being drawn towards the RHINO Motors because of the low price,
However as with everything in life, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

I will keep hunting for a MINN KOTA Online,
Many Thanks to Chris & Richard for the tips! Smile
