Feather & bits storageHi Fellow Fly Tyers
Now that my tying bits & pieces are starting to mount up I keep them in a large plastic storage box with lid. I wanted to know what to put in the box to stop mites or insects from destroying them.
Ta much

im not sure what you could put in the boxes but if you put your materials in the freezer for a few hours should kill any mites

Napthalene crystals I believe are what you are after - the same stuff moth balls are made from. Sometimes if you buy a cape you'll notice a few of these wee crystals lying in the bottom of the packet.

As Gary says Napthalene crystals are the standard for keeping mites etc at bay.

Hi Plum
I kept my stuff in an air tight plastic storage box and I found that some of my capes were mouldy and damp with condensation, I now use the bags of silica jell that you get inside packaging to keep it at bay.

I had a similar problem with some deer pelts that I dyed, silca gell packs solved the problem.

i find that the materials only really sweat and get mouldy if they haven't dried out yet, even i they feel dry give them an extra week to dry out (only applies if ur cureing materials urself) shop bought materials should b fine the way u buy them bt i would try to keep all capes in there original bags

yeh, i remember skinning a 3 english partridge and 4 pheasants a few years ago after a days driven shooting at Glenarm estate. After i "thought" they had dried out i placed them inside large sealed plastic bags and to my dissapointment after a few weeks the skins were covered in mould. Thankfully however after a quick wash with a wet cloth, and letting them dry out again for a few weeks more, they turned out great and have been the centrepiece in many flies i have tied since.
