Introduction to the sportHello all.
Would like to know your thoughts about teaching someone who'd like to try flyfishing. Do you think the first-timer is better using a short rod (7'), or a longer one (9'6"), to try the fine art? Would appreciate the input.
Tight lines!

m8 i think a 9,6 rod would be the best one to start with as it is the basic rod for fly fishing i would usea 9.6 7 wt rod were as if i was fishing a river i would use a smaller rod. but its better to start with the bigger rods because in you get the hang of the castig on them you could cast the smaller ones easier it depends really what type of fly fishing you would like to try hope this help

personally I would use a 10ft stiff rod for a beginner with line weight of 7. simply because i think a stiffer rod helps to get the basic of casting and then move onto different action rods. I used a 10ft #tip action when i started and now i use a 9ft6 #6/7 middle-tip action rod.

Chris | I personally think it depends on the age of the person learning. If it is an adult then a 10ft 7 or 8 weight rod would be ideal for the lakes or maybe a 9ft 5 or 6 if they intend on fishing the rivers. However if it is a kid, i think 9ft would be big enough as some of the other rods are to big and heavy for them, as they are young and still growing. I know that whenever i introduced my grandson to the sport, i started him with a 9ft 5weight.
