marabou questionWhen ever I am tying flies with marabou tails or wings I strip all the strands from one side of the central quill and roll it into a little plume. I then do the same on the other side and add them together. If the feathers are small I may even use a third plume. One just never looks enough. I would use less if I was tying something that used the plumes for both wing and tail ie cats whisker.
However I have noticed on some videos, magazines etc that people always seem to use the fibres from one side only for each fly. Am I using to much?

I tend to just use a pinch from one side. I guess it's all down to personal preference, though if you have a flybox containing what looks like lots of very small cats you may be using too much.

Ahh, marabou the fly tyers marmite, some love it some hate it.
What I always do is this.
Pinch of the amount needed from one side of the quill, i then cut of the enamel/quill end, Then i would hold the marabou in my left hand and with thumb & forefinger of right hand pluck away the fluff (your be surprised how much is there), this can be kept and used as a dubbing if you so wish. This method gives me even fibres to tie in.
If no one understands this I will bring a plume of marabou tomorrow and demonstrate.
