Name the Fly

Hi Mark

The fly that I tied was called the Flamethrower. It is a Scottish Pattern originated by Duncan Egan. The original pattern had Bucktail in the wing I like Polar Bear due to its translucent properties.

The dressing of the fly is as follows

Hook: Partridge Salar 7-11 Silver
Thread: Danvilles Flymaster 6/0 Fluorescent Red or White for real pearl heads.
Tag and Rib: Lagartun Small Silver Tinsel 3 turns at tail and then continued along the rear body for 3 turns
Rear Body: Holographic Silver Tinsel Medium
Centre Hackle: Long Hot Orange Saltwater Saddle
Wing: Orange Polar Bear or Bucktail 12 - 15 fibres stacked with 4 strands of Silver Crystal Flash over
Front Body: Black Floss
Head Hackles: Hot Orange and Yellow Saltwater Saddle tied in together
Head: Pearl Tinsel with three coats of varnish over.

A few points on the tying that will help. If you are tying these for yourself a thin coat of epoxy over the rear tinsel will make it bullet proof and by replacing the floss with Lagartun Flatbraid you have a strong body. Keep the body quite short do not go past the hook junction where both stems have been brazed together. The Polar Bear wing is twice the length of the centre hackle. If you have difficulty winding the 2 head hackles use 1 dyed Sunburst. The pearl tinsel heads are a bit of a pain you will need lots of wax on the back of the pearl tinsel or a small drop of superglue soaked into the head. If you use superglue do not use Cellire Varnish on the head it will go on fire. Hard as Nails is the stuff

Polar Bear Hair and Saltwater Saddles are available from John McLaughlin at Lough Swilly Flies you will find him very competitive for the Salar Hook Range also.

Hope that this helps you Very Happy

No problem Mark. I will be finalising next years programme at the AGM in April. I have one more night left which is the 18th March and believe it or not the pattern that I have selected to finish with is the Flamethrower. Island Art Centre Lisburn, 7-9 pm Workshop 1 Smile
