novice looking for help

i know there are dry flies and wet flys but is there some that would be no use on a lake and great on a river i am wanting to take up lake fishing and am wandering what flys to look out for i have been told shipmans buzzers work well on lakes can some one put some light on this for me.

Merv,

Shipman's Buzzer is an excellent fly at most times of the year on stillwater but especially on warm evenings when hatches of flies are prolific. It is also pretty easy to tie even for a novice. I'll have a look and see if I can find a step by step for you. There's also the Shuttlecock, which is sort of like half a Shipman's.

Merv are you tying yourself?
If so I can forward onto you a pile of step by steps.

In the meantime this link will point you in the rough direction of the hatches http://nita.myfreeforum.org/about395.html .

Klinkhammers would be a fly I would recommend using. Not the easiest to tie but are a very effective pattern to use in a buzzer hatch. Shipmans like beatnick said are a great pattern, takes can be very agressive when fishing them. Sedge patterns are also worth a try in the summer months from July onwards.

Merv,
I have e-mailed you a step by step book.
