Online Fly tying material suppliersHi guys,
I have been looking to exploit the weak $US Dollar & buy some fly tying materials from the U.S.A
I have previously ordered form www.Mudhole.com
The materials & tools are very good quality. The Tiemco hooks are cheap!
The only drawback is that they ship them to you using FEDEX.
Once you get your stuff you also get an invoice from fedex for 10% EU customs tax. what a nasty surprise- I just ignored the letters & eventually they gave up trying to get my money.
Has anyone got any good ONLINE fly tying supply sites that are of INterest to the rest of us

I get a lot of stuff from Cabella's, like yourself have had to pay customs charges (sometimes at £20 for the more expensive items) but what they sometimes do on the smaller fly tying stuff is mark the declaration as a gift eliminating the customs charge. Have also purchased some very good capes from jimsflyco, he sells a lot of stuff via e-bay and never have been stung with a customs charge from him. Some of his capes have cost me £7.58, a core difference as the same capes here would have cost me in the range of £50-£60.

yea jimsflyco r pretty good value especailly the pro grade capes altho i found some of them had quite a low barb count on some of the smaller feathers but on the other hand at that price u can afford to use 2 feathers at a time

I am going over to the U.S in April- I am hoping to buy some fly blanks that I can carry back with me, I am going to have a go at building my own rod.
I was thinking of a small stream rod around 6' for a no.3 line.
Those small rods really are alot of fun with trout upto 1lb.
I am really looking forward to fly shopping there, I believe that the quality of the flies that are for sale are much higher than we have here.
Thanks for the tips on Jimsflyco, Im gong to give them a try!

The flies over their are of a very high quality. The professional tyers all belong to a union which looks after the interests of the tyers. Thats why no flies as far as I am aware are allowed to be imported in the country.

Thats a fantastic idea-everybody wins, the flytiers win, the fishermen win ...........on second thoughts the fish actually lose out
What about UMPQUA?
U.S. Company Umpqua Feather Merchants, has a fly-tying factory in Sri Lanka, which produces world class flies. Lanka Fishing Flies is the world's single largest producer of hand-tied fishing flies, and the world's largest producer of custom flies. In addition to its high volume, Lanka Fishing Flies are considered the highest quality. According to Umpqua's website, quality and excellence of each fly pattern take priority over the number of flies produced. www.umpqua.com

there a lot easier done than u would imagine, but for small trout i would go for a longer rod maybe 8ft but something quite soft with a slow action, recently ive built a rainshadow rx6, not a big money blank but brill for wild brown on a river up to 15m wide

Thanks for the advice Mick,
I have been told that the best wap to wrap the rings is to use the clear varnish that model makers use, build up 4/5 coats.
I am hoping to use single leg snakes, that way I only have one Wrap per ring.
Have you got any info on the spacings- or does this come with the blank
I guess It must be very satisfying to catch fish on a rod you built yourself

i use flex coat lite for the whippings- two coats is plenty, ring spaceings normally come wit the blank but if there not supplied then just put it against another rod of similer action and size, yo shouldn't be to far away wit that, catching fish on a rod that you've built your self is more satisfying than catchin fish on flies youv'e tied yourself and doing both at the same time well that just makes every day out that bit more memorable

Thanks for the advice Mick!
Are there any good books that you could reccomend for builing fly rods?
Im Converted!!!!! I am definitely going to wrap my own rod this season, Pity I hadn't got round to it over the winter.
The only thing is that there will be my GLoomis 9' 5WT for sale on here when I do build my rod!

who needs books, its really not that difficult, the hardest bit is whippin on the eyes and if u can tie flies then u wont find this a problem
