Rod / Line weight

I have a 6wt rod and today by accident I used a 7wt line, I was able to load the rod easier and my casting was by far my best yet. My question is - Would using this set up damage my rod or could I continue using it?

I have quite often "over lined" my rods, as far as I have noticed it has not damaged my rods.

I wouldn't think that going 1 line rating above the recomended line rating should do any harm after all not every line is the same, i find greys platnum lines to be quite lite and would normally opt for a weight heavier than recomended or also if the rod is pretty stiff, If it feels better stick with it after all  you only hve t please your self

By what I can gather the AFTM rating of a line is based on a DT line so to correctly rate a WF line to your rod you simply add 1 to it i.e a rod with a AFTM rating of 7 would be a WF8 or a DT7 line. This information was conveyed to me by Stan Headley.

Thanks Guys

I find that many american made rods (loomis etc), often require a line rating heavier than stated. (i.e. my 9ft 5weight loomis, requires a 6 weight.)

I was advised by an experienced angler to make a 10' 7wt rod my next purchase as i had been using a 9' 5/6 wt up to this point for river fishing and lake fishing combined. He suggested that my current rod my be a little light should i hook into a larger trout . Could anyone clarify for me which aftm is a "true " 7wt rod , is it aftm 6/7 or aftm 7/8?
Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
P.s I am considering a greyflex m2 outfit with grxi reel, 3 spools lines etc.

Hi Twincast,

The M2 #6/7 would be the better rod for a #7 line, the M2 7/8 would cast better with an #8 line.

Hope this helps.

Darren Very Happy
