Lough Corrib
Co. Galway

Lough Corrib is a vast lake of 41,600 acres. It is mostly shallows and contains many islands. The water is very clear and it holds a good stock of trout which average about 1lbs. Fish of up to 20lbs are occasionally taking by trolling.

Fly fishing is best in spring and autumn, but may be practised throughout the year. The most popular area for early spring Duck Fly fishing is Salthouse bay near Cong. Double figure bags are common in this area on a good day during April. The area round Inchiquin Island is also good.

The Corrib Mayfly hatch is renown all over the world and the ordinary wet fly fishing at this time of year can be excellent. Dapping is the most productive daytime method and during the summer evenings big fish move inshore and especially into the island shores to feed on good hatches of midges and sedges. The islands near Oughterard are good at this time.

The trout taken at the south end of the lake between Annaghdown and Curra are rather larger than at the northern end. The normal catch on Lough Corrib for boat fishing is two or three trout per rod per day. A skilled angler could expect to double that. For shore fishing, a notable location is the north shore of Ballynalty Bay.
